The house of representatives has raised an alarm over the surging record of rape cases between January 2020 to May 2020.
The house raised the alarm in a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by representative Unyime Idem on the need for federal government to set up sex offender and sexual violation courts across the country
In his motion representative Unyime Idem said the Nigeria police has confirmed a surge in rape cases to 717 between January 2020 to May 2020.
The lawmaker who described rape as a gross violation of human rights express worry that the spate of reported rape cases in the society if not addressed will lead to doom.
He cautioned against stigmatization of rape victims in the country .
The lawmaker called for a uniform legal framework to ensure stringent punishment against perpetrators.
The house thereafter mandated it’s committees on women affairs and social development, national judiciary and human rights to look into the matter and report back within two weeks
