The Federal Government has called on innovators, start-ups and research institutions with cutting-edge solutions , capable of enhancing national and regional security in Defence, to showcase them towards contributing their quarter to the nation’s security architecture.

The Minister of State for Defense, Bello Matawalle, made the call Monday in Abuja during a Media briefing to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Defence Industries Corporation Of Nigeria (DICON), and the launch of the Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC), with the theme, “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology.”

Matawalle described as crucial, the role played by DICON in national security and technological advancement.

“We invite innovators, startups, and research institutions to present their cutting-edge solutions that can enhance national and regional security through the Defence Innovation Challenge.

“Today, DICON is celebrating 60 years of dedicated service in the production and repair of military hardware and equipment. Since its establishment, DICON has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s defence sector, collaborating with indigenous companies to achieve excellence in military manufacturing.”

The minister said if properly harnesses, the new DICON Act 2023 has the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and national security by: boosting foreign exchange earnings through local production of defence equipment, Creating jobs for skilled Nigerians, reducing capital flight to foreign nations and being at the forefront of Nigeria’s defence manufacturing, contributing significantly to national security and technological advancement.

He further stated that the Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC) will serve as a premier platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and explore the future frontiers of defence technology in Africa.

Fielding questions on the significance of the DICON Act 2023, the Permanent secretary, Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim Kana, said
The new Act prioritizes Military hardware made by indigenous companies before turning abroad
, except where they are not available in the country while ensuring that local manufacturers make a good return on their investment.

Kana also said the Ministry is facilitating the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with its Steel Development counterpart to ensure that raw materials needed by DICON are produced in Ajaocuta.

The Director General, DICON, Major General Aniedi Effiong Edet said the conference is meant to enhance technology ideas by bringing talented youths in Nigeria and harnessing their potentials in the right way instead of allowing them to fall into the wrong hands, who might use their technological prowess against rhe interest of the nation.

The conference is scheduled for 14-15th August 2024.
