On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) conducted a targeted enforcement operation on rice traders who claim force measurements, contrary to the supposed weight at the Garki Modern Market in Abuja.
The Commission in a statement signed by the Acting Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adamu Abdullahi is said to be
part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to protect consumer rights and interests, as mandated by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, particularly under Sections 17(l)(s), 116(2), 124, 125, 138, and 155.
Abdullahi said in the process of verifying the accuracy of product claims on 25kg and 50kg bags or rice, there were discrepancies between the claimed weight and the actual weight printed on the bags. He described it as double offense as it violates the Commission’s Act while also exploiting consumers through deceptive means.
He further said a summon has been issued to perpetrators to appear before the Commission and submit an undertaking to turn a new leave and also sign a Mutual Supervisory Understanding to monitor compliance.
The Commission further encourage consumers to demand and insist on full value for money. We advise verifying the weight of rice packages to align with stated claims and report any inconsistencies through the complaint tab on our website (www.fccpc.gov.ng).
“In accordance with Section 125 of the FCCPA, businesses must not make false or deceptive representations about material facts to consumers. Section 138 further places liability on manufacturers, importers, distributors, and suppliers for breach of implied obligations by law, including product claims.
The Commission said it is committed to safeguarding consumer rights and will continue to relentlessly pursue fairness in the marketplace.
