The Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has said its commitment to zero carbon emission by 2060, through reducing the greenhouse build-up, which is a fallout of climate change, has enable it adopt the use of other alternative fossil fuel for its production activities.
This revelation was made by the management of the company in Obajana during 2-day Environmental Journalism workshop organised for journalists by the company in partnership with Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre, CAMIC, with the theme: “Reporting the environment for sustainability”.
The Obajana Head of Plant, Adinoyi Haruna said it has adopted the use of alternative fuels like shredded tyres used by its trucks, palm kernel shells, saw dust and mango seeds, in order to reduce the use of coal whose emissions endangers the environment.
“Environmental sustainability is an attitude and a way of life.
I want to state that the Dangote Group was very deliberate in sponsoring this workshop because it is the right way to go in protecting the environment. There should be more and more of this discussions.
“We need the environment more than it needs us. Hence, the need to sustain the environment. It is the responsibility of all of us to try to do all we can to sustain the environment. This should be a way of life for all of us.
“We add 25 percent of limestone in our cement. This help us to reduce significantly, the fuel we use. We’re also using palm kernel shelves, shredded tires for fuel to power the plant”, he said.
The Head of Dangote Academy, Wale Adeyemi said the company has set the standard by adopting technology to mitigate environment degradation. He said its use of technology helps to contain dust, thereby preventing it from harming the environment and humans who live in it.
“Environmental sustainability needs collective efforts to deal with. At Dangote, we produce cement which comes out as powder. We have state of the art facility to trap dust and prevent it from degrading the environment. Apart from protecting the environment, we prevent our product from wasting.
“We use the electrostatic prostetor and the bag-out technology to trap dust and recycle it into the system.
“We operate with environment consciousness. You can see here is very clean, our sky also is clean and with no pollution, even though we are currently producing.
“Not only that, we make sure that the environment is safe by planting trees. You can see trees everywhere. This Academy plants not less than 5000 trees every year”, he said.
The management enjoined the participants to commit to environmental sustainability, not just by reporting to create awareness but also adopting the reuse of plastics in their various homes.
