The President, Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to amend the Electoral Act 2022, he signed some days ago.
Buhari made the request in a letter addressed to the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, and read at the plenary Tuesday.
asked the federal parliament to consider the outright deletion of Section 84 (12).
The president enjoined the Senate to outrightly delete section 84(12) which request for the resignation of political appointees before party primaries.
The president stated that the provision amounted to the disenfranchisement of political appointees.
This move may not be unconnected with alleged intention of Buhari’s cabinet minister to contest for political positions in their respective states.
With this provision, the era of ministers contesting and retaining their appointments after failure to secure tickets is over. This will further reduce the influence of such ministers at congresses and elections.
