The Director General/CEO, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke has said that metrology affects all aspects of society, enhancing the quality of life and protecting the environment.

Dr. Okeke stated this when he addressed the Nation on the occasion of World Metrology Day, with the theme “We measure today for a Sustainable Tomorrow,”.

Okeke who said metrology underscores the critical role of measurement in promoting a sustainable global economy and environment also noted that accurate measurement is particularly vital for developing countries like Nigeria, as it influences energy efficiency in industries, resource management in agriculture and forestry, and compliance with environmental regulations.

The Director-General highlighted several benefits of accurate measurements, including:

  • Promoting fair and transparent trade, which can improve economic conditions and reduce poverty.
  • Ensuring reliable test and calibration results to enhance health and well-being.
  • Developing systems to guarantee access to affordable and clean energy.
  • Driving industrial innovation and growth.

He further called on stakeholders to uphold their responsibility to safeguard the environment and maintain the effective calibration of measuring equipment, which is essential for economic development.

National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) around the world, including Nigeria, develop and coordinate measurement standards and procedures. These institutes participate in global measurement comparisons to ensure the reliability of measurement results, supervised by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) and Regional Metrology Organisations. The International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) also plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy of measurements, thereby supporting global trade.

World Metrology Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in Paris in 1875, which established a global standard for measurements. This day celebrates the science of measurement—metrology—which is fundamental to technological and scientific progress. Accurate measurements are crucial for various sectors including industrial manufacturing, international trade, and environmental protection.

In conclusion, Dr. Okeke acknowledged and honored the contributions of individuals advancing metrology globally, congratulating them on their efforts and achievements.
